August Meeting

September's DEP meeting featured Charles Glover, the executive director of DFW Teach for America. This meeting was the first of two focused on education. The purpose of these two meetings is to gain insight to the current status of education in Dallas. Glover truly did an excellent job inspiring our group to be part of the solution and expressed that organizations like TFA are only a piece of the solution.After Glover's talk, DEP focused on how to get involved and where our assets would be utilized best. DEP will now work on creating a bank of our skills and experiences for the access of those who need it, whether they are teachers, nonprofits, or even friends.

Our next meeting is on the books. DEP will hold an education discussion panel to educate and activate the audience. We want to provide a forum for people with a vested interest in education and DISD.Our panelists include: Bernadette Nutall (DISD, Board of Trustee), Nakia Douglas (Principal, Barack Obama Academy), Zach Hall (TFA) and Justin Coppedge (Leadership DISD).The event is November 8th at SMU. July Meeting and the Better Block Project

Jason Roberts, Oak Cliff’s Renaissance man, ended his talk with DEP members by saying, “Don’t plan. Think small. Set a date. And publish it.”So that’s what we did. We joined Roberts and his Better Block Project crew in redefining, reimagining, and reinventing several blocks along Ross Avenue. One week before the event, we decided to create a bus stop/marketplace in correlation with D Magazine and La Terra Studios. We wanted to create a practical, yet entertaining space for people waiting on a bus. Three days later, members of the group met with La Terra Studio where the discussion focused on how to create shade for the bus stop. Located on a parking lot next to a liquor store, our spot gave us few options. But it was decided that we’d gather five-gallon buckets, put poles in the buckets, and put umbrellas in the top. Then we’d take sheets and stretch them from a billboard to an arbor that the Better Block group had used for a previous project.The next few days were spent gathering supplies, printing water bottle labels and showing off our sketches. By the time Sunday rolled around, we were ready to build.Starting at 6:30 in the morning, we transformed the parking lot. As we worked on our project, a Las Ramblas market sprung up in the street in front of us, a dumpster pool appeared at the Fellowship Church, and food trucks rolled in.Even though it was 100 degrees out, people milled around on Ross Avenue. So many people said, ‘'You can't put a market in the center of a street. People will get run over.’ The reality was that auto-traffic was calmed to a level that made the area safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users who had to enter in and out of the area. It also allowed for greater economic potential in a space that is void of retail, while creating a vibrant street life.”Our umbrellas and buckets ended up taking second place in the Better Block contest. Not bad for not planning, thinking small, and bringing it together in less than a week.

The beginning
The Dallas Engaged Professionals (DEP) were started by people eager to see their ideas and passions for social impact occur in Dallas. Taking great inspiration from TED, Spark Club and other idea-sharing forums, the thought occurred to create a similar group for the post-collegiate demographic. There was a vision to bring together the intelligent, ambitious and innovative Dallas young professionals in order to collaborate and thus impact the community. Our mission is simple yet evolving: Provide a forum for engaged professionals to share ideas and passions and then put them into action. We don't merely discuss how to make Dallas the city we want to live in, but we go outside and do it. This group is truly dynamic in its members and passions. We are coaches, journalists, nonprofit leaders, teachers, entrepreneurs, designers and emerging business leaders. We love better blocks, food trucks, free concerts, bike trails, kids, and sports. And, most importantly, we love Dallas.
